Collie Rescue of Western Pennsylvania, Inc.

I Want to Adopt a Collie.
What Must I Do?

Prospective adoptors will sometimes be directed to shelters currently holding Collies or to owners who wish to place their Collie in a new home and will adopt their Collie directly from the shelter or the owner. There is no charge from COLLIE RESCUE for this service.

If COLLIE RESCUE has taken custody of a Collie and placed it in a temporary foster home, prospective adoptors may make arrangements to see the dog in the foster home.

Prospective adopting families who wish to adopt a Collie in the custody of COLLIE RESCUE will be interviewed and asked to complete an adoption application. Basic information is requested, such as why they want a Collie, their pet ownership history, current pet ownership information, number of children in the home and their ages, and whether there is a fenced yard for the dog. Temperament, sex and color preferences are noted. The prospective adoptor's veterinarian's name is requested, and a call made to the office for a reference. Our goal is to achieve a successful match between the Collie and the adopting family. Naturally, we want a happy ending to every rescue story, and part of that process is selecting a suitable Collie to fit into the lifestyle and needs of the particular adopting family.

The prospective adoptor's signature is required on the COLLIE RESCUE adoption contract, a copy of which may be reviewed prior to the adoption.

An adoption donation is requested to help cover the expenses of the Collie. Please note, however, that many of the Collies we rescue require extended veterinary and foster care before they can be offered for adoption, and we are unable to recoup all of the expenses incurred. For that reason, COLLIE RESCUE relies heavily on the generous donations of our friends and fellow fanciers to assist with the financial burden of rescuing.

In most cases, the rescue Collie may be adopted and taken home immediately from the foster home. The adoption agreement is signed and the donation paid before the Collie is released from the custody of COLLIE RESCUE. If the Collie does not work out as a satisfactory companion to the adoptor, COLLIE RESCUE requires that the Collie be returned to COLLIE RESCUE. The adoption donation will be refunded if the Collie is returned within 30 days of adoption.
